A black screen on IPTV is a symptom with several unrelated causes, and the fastest way to narrow it down is one question: can you still hear the audio? A black screen with sound is a video-decoding or display problem. A black screen with no sound is a stream, authentication or playlist problem. Use that split first, then the sections below.
Black screen but audio still plays
The stream is arriving; your device just is not putting a picture on screen.
- Switch the player's decoder between hardware and software for that channel. A codec the device cannot hardware-decode (often HEVC/H.265 or 10-bit HDR) is the classic cause of sound-but-no-video.
- On a TV or box, check the HDMI chain: power-cycle the TV and any soundbar or receiver together, try a different HDMI port, and reseat the cable. A failed HDMI or HDCP handshake shows as black with audio, especially after waking from standby or switching sources.
- Disable HDR or Dolby Vision for that channel, or in the device's display settings, and retest — an HDR mode the display cannot handle can blank the picture. See IPTV Dolby Vision support and HDMI 2.1 explained.
- Lower the stream quality if the app offers alternates for the channel.
Black screen with no audio
Nothing is playing at all.
- Try other channels. If every channel is black, it is account- or app-wide, not a single stream. If only some are black, those specific streams are down — note the names for support.
- Check for an error behind the black screen — a faint message, a spinner that never resolves, or a code. Match it in IPTV error codes explained.
- Reload the playlist or re-login. An expired session, or a playlist that failed to refresh, shows as black. Full checklist: IPTV playlist not loading.
- Confirm the subscription is active and you are within your simultaneous-connection limit — being over the limit can present as a black screen rather than a clear error in some apps.
Black screen only when changing channels
A black gap of one to several seconds on every channel change, then normal playback, is usually a buffer or decoder re-initialisation delay. Increase the player's buffer slightly (buffer size explained), enable any "fast zapping" or "quick channel switch" option the app has, and prefer a wired connection. If the black gap never resolves into a picture, treat it as "black with no audio" above.
Black screen in one app but not another
Install a second player app and load the same channel. If it plays, the first app is the problem — update it, clear its cache, or switch to it permanently. App codec support varies a lot; the player apps comparison covers this. If both apps show black on the same channel, the stream or your device's decoding is the cause, not the app.
Black screen only on 4K or HDR channels
If SD and HD channels are fine but 4K/UHD or HDR channels are black, often with audio, the device cannot decode or display that format, or the connection cannot sustain it. Force software decoding to confirm it is a codec limit, check the display supports the resolution and HDR mode, and verify your connection has the sustained headroom — see optimise your home network for streaming.
Black screen after a device or app update
A recent update to the player app, the device firmware or the TV's OS can change decoder or HDMI behaviour. Clear the app cache, re-enter credentials, and check the app's settings for a decoder option that was reset. If a device firmware update caused it, the device maker's support forum often has a known fix.
Quick reset sequence
- Fully close the player app from recents, reopen, and try the channel.
- Toggle the decoder between hardware and software for that channel.
- Power-cycle the device and TV or soundbar together for 30 seconds.
- Reload the playlist or log in again.
- Test the same channel in a second player app.
- Still black on every channel with no audio — contact support with the channel names and any error text.
If a black screen affects only one of your devices, IPTV works on one device but not another covers isolating it. For black-with-audio that turns out to be an audio-path issue on closer inspection, see IPTV audio not working, and the full symptom map is in the streaming troubleshooting guide.
