Chromecast works differently from devices like Fire TV or Apple TV — instead of running apps directly, it receives ("casts") a stream sent from another device on the same network.
How casting works
- Open a compatible player app on your phone or computer.
- Select the cast icon and choose your Chromecast device.
- The stream plays on your TV while your phone or computer controls playback.
Chromecast with Google TV
Newer Chromecast with Google TV devices include a full interface and remote, functioning much more like a standard streaming box — see our Google TV vs Android TV comparison for that platform.
Common mistake
Assuming every IPTV player app supports casting. Check the app's feature list first, since not all include a Chromecast button.
Prefer a device that runs apps directly instead? See our full Devices page.
