H.265 / HEVC

A more efficient successor to H.264, delivering comparable quality at roughly 40-50% smaller file sizes, at the cost of licensing fees.

HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) is common for 4K IPTV content specifically, since its improved compression makes higher resolutions more bandwidth-practical. Its main trade-off against the royalty-free AV1 codec is licensing cost, though HEVC currently has broader hardware decoding support across devices.
