IPTV Subtitles Not Working: Causes and Fixes

By Marcus ReyesSeptember 14, 20263 min read

Subtitle problems on IPTV usually come down to one of five things: the stream does not carry subtitles, the player is not set to show them, the wrong track is selected, the timing is off, or the text is there but unreadable. Work through them in that order and most cases resolve in a couple of minutes.

First check: does the stream actually carry subtitles?

Unlike a streaming service where every title has captions, live IPTV channels only have subtitles if the broadcaster includes them in the feed, and often only for specific programmes — films and dramas more than live sport or news. If one channel has working subtitles and another does not, that is expected: the second channel simply is not sending any. Catch-up and VOD content is more likely to include a subtitle track than a live feed.

Turning subtitles on in your player app

During playback, open the audio and subtitle menu (often a speech-bubble or "CC" icon, or inside a settings cog) and choose a subtitle track. Points to check:

  • Some players default subtitles to off and do not remember the setting between channels — look for a "remember subtitle preference" or "auto-enable subtitles" option in the app's global settings.
  • If the menu shows no subtitle tracks at all, the stream is not carrying any for that programme.
  • A track listed as "teletext" or "DVB subtitle" is normal for broadcast feeds; select it the same way.

Wrong language, or several subtitle tracks

A channel may carry multiple subtitle tracks — different languages, plus a "hard of hearing" (SDH) version that adds sound descriptions. If you get the wrong language, cycle to the next track. If tracks are labelled with codes like "eng", "und" (undetermined) or nothing at all, you may have to try each one. Setting a preferred subtitle language in the app's global settings makes it pick correctly next time where labels allow.

Subtitles out of sync

  • Most players have a subtitle delay or offset control in the playback menu — adjust in small steps until it matches.
  • On live channels a small constant offset is common; on catch-up it is usually tighter.
  • If sync drifts progressively, change channel and back, or restart the app.

Subtitles show but are unreadable

If text appears as blocks, question marks or the wrong characters, it is an encoding or font issue. Try:

  • A different subtitle track for the same programme.
  • The player's subtitle text encoding setting — UTF-8 is the safe default; some broadcast subtitles need a regional encoding.
  • Increasing subtitle size and adding a background or outline in the app's subtitle style settings so text is legible over bright scenes.

Catch-up and VOD subtitles behave differently

Recorded content often has a proper embedded subtitle track even when the live channel did not, so it is worth checking catch-up if you specifically need subtitles for a programme. How catch-up works is covered in IPTV catch-up TV explained.

Device and app-specific quirks

  • Switch player app. Subtitle support varies a lot between apps; the comparison in best IPTV player apps compared notes which handle subtitles and multiple tracks well.
  • Kodi: subtitle behaviour depends on the PVR add-on and player settings — see the Kodi setup guide.
  • Some smart-TV built-in players ignore stream subtitle tracks entirely; a dedicated player app is the fix.

If subtitles are missing on just one device while another shows them fine, that points to the app or its settings rather than the stream — see IPTV works on one device but not another.
