Chromecast Guide: How Casting Works for IPTV

By Elena VossAugust 3, 20261 min read

Chromecast works differently from devices like Fire TV or Apple TV — instead of running apps directly, it receives ("casts") a stream sent from another device on the same network.

How casting works

  1. Open a compatible player app on your phone or computer.
  2. Select the cast icon and choose your Chromecast device.
  3. The stream plays on your TV while your phone or computer controls playback.

Chromecast with Google TV

Newer Chromecast with Google TV devices include a full interface and remote, functioning much more like a standard streaming box — see our Google TV vs Android TV comparison for that platform.

Common mistake

Assuming every IPTV player app supports casting. Check the app's feature list first, since not all include a Chromecast button.

Prefer a device that runs apps directly instead? See our full Devices page.
