Video Compression

The process of reducing video file size by removing redundant information, using both spatial and temporal techniques.

Raw, uncompressed video is far too large to stream practically. Compression exploits the fact that consecutive frames are often very similar (temporal redundancy) and that a single frame often contains repeated patterns (spatial redundancy), storing only what's genuinely new rather than every pixel of every frame in full.
