Transcoding
Converting video from one format, codec, or bitrate to another, often to produce multiple quality levels for adaptive streaming.
A provider transcodes a source video into several quality tiers — say, 1080p, 720p, and 480p versions — so a player app can select whichever one fits the current connection. Transcoding happens on the server side, using significant processing power, well before any content reaches your device.
